HoW to .. Hummus

Hey guy's First post on one step at a time the point of this blog is to share recipes, help people eat healthier, and save people a buck or two, :)

it's a new year and everyone is trying to eat healthy but well eating healthy can cost a pretty penny so here's my how to save about $10.00-$15.00 if you’re a hummus eater ")

Let me start by saying I love hummus we (being my mom and I) nearly have hummus with something every day (veggies, on sandwiches, pitta bread etc.) Hummus is really healthy and virtually fat free and full of protein.

But I don't love paying $3.99-$4.99 for a small container of it plus I buy about 3 of them for a week so let’s do the simple math If you do 3 x 4.99= 15.00 a week! 15.00 x4 week's = 60.00 a month! spent  just on hummus...it’s kind of a lot of money so here is a recipe that will save you about 45.00 a month

The first start cost is about 21.00 but once you have the main  ingredients  all you will have to do is buy chickpeas when you go shopping two cans of chickpeas is 1.69 if you buy from Meijer

SO things you need
  • ·         -2 -15oz can of drained chickpeas
  • ·         -1/4 cup of chickpea juice (reserve when you drain)
  • ·         ½ cup of water
  • ·         -2 teaspoons e of  lemons (more if you like it more of a lemon taste)
  • ·         -2 Teaspoons of garlic (more if you like garlic)
  • ·         -2 tbsp of sesame seed paste (tahini)
  • ·         -2 tbsp of olive oil
  • ·         -1 tbsp cayenne pepper
  • ·         -1 tbsp of cumin powder
  • ·         -1/2 tsp of salt

You can add different things like red peppers, roasted garlic, spinach, all different kind of things if you like this is just a plain hummus recipe
and you need this

I suggest you start off with the chickpeas first open the cans
and drain them keep 1/4 cup of the juice from the can and get rid of the rest .

Than you take the garbanzo beans and put them in a bowl  until your ready to put them in the blender

Now I have a ninja blender so I use that but I will have to say if you have a food processor that would work much better but if you use your ninja like I did use the bigger taller blender bowl. the small one won't be able to blend the beans

after you do that I like to cook the garlic with some lemon juice and add little chill powder to it but you don't have to do that

Than The next step is to take the garbanzo beans and put them in them in the blender/processor .. remember what I said about using the big blender blow I learned that the hard way half way through making The hummus ...
you need to run them for a minute with no water or juice in the just so you can crack them open they will look like this......

not very yummy looking but the next t=step is to take the 1/4 cup juice from the can you have sitting there and add that into the blender than run for 30 seconds.
than add in your water, the 2 Teaspoons of garlic ,2 tbsp of sesame seed paste (tahini)
2 tbsp of olive oil,1 tbsp cayenne pepper and 1 tbsp of cumin powder. blend until you have the smoothness you like in your hummus
Place in a bowl  and than place it  in the fridge to chill.
Serve chilled with drizzled olive oil and  pita bread or warm French bread
